Q & A: Inteview with Andrew
Q - You grew up in a family of stylists. Tell us a little about that.
A - Mom and dad’s shop, Dad was a platform artist and educator, mom eventually ran a beauty shop out of the house, aunt would run the big hair show, grandpa owned the salon. Has another uncle and a cousin that also do hair.
Q - Tell us about some of your most notable experiences....
A - Judging hair shows, fixing $80 haircuts, teaching beauty school, an advanced educator for Nexxus & Aloxxi. Owning a salon that was voted Top 10 in Denver on A-List, doing hair for Denver Fashion Week and published photoshoots.
Q - Why is your shop in an senior living community?
A - At this point in my career, I can be wherever I want. I tired of the rat race and fakeness of big salons, so I choose to serve God by serving one of the most underserved populations we have today: seniors. I love listening to their stories, learning from them and making them feel loved. They see me like family and have come to think my kids as their great-grandkids. It’s like having a village of grandparents to love on my kids!
Q - What's one client experience that really sticks out in your mind?
A - Back when I owned a 15 chair salon in Denver, I had this client that told me he didn’t care where I did hair or that I wanted to make my salon more refined. He said that if I was doing hair out of my garage it wouldn’t matter to him – he comes for an amazing cut and for me, not my surroundings. This was a pivotal moment for me because I realized I had been trying too hard to impress with finishes and all that really mattered was the human connection and how good my work was. We paid homage to this in my most recent shoot – see if you can find the wide shot with hints of my garage in it!
